Edward Chan
Edward is a Postdoctoral Fellow of China Studies at Australian National University and the Associate Editor of The China Journal. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Department of Government and International Relations at the University of Sydney. His doctoral thesis examines the development of China’s maritime security strategy since the 1980s. Edward also holds a Master of International Relations and a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and International Studies and Sociology from the University of Melbourne. He was a Casual Tutor at the University of Melbourne in 2021 and a Visiting Fellow at the University of Sydney in 2020.
Edward studies international relations, China’s foreign policy, East Asian security, Chinese maritime history and maritime politics and governance. He is an author of China’s Maritime Security Strategy: The Evolution of a Growing Sea Power (Routledge, 2021). He has also published in various journals including Asian Security, Global Change, Peace & Security and Australian Journal of Maritime & Ocean Affairs.
Edward is born in Hong Kong and moved to Australia since 2005. He can speak and write fluent Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese.
