ASIA3220: Chinese Language Training and Rural China Field Study

This course is undertaken as a part of a degree. This program in Yunnan province, China, consists of three weeks of intensive language-learning followed by one week of field study focussing on developmental challenges in China’s countryside.

Eligibility: Any ANU undergraduate student; no prior training in Chinese language or Chinese studies required.
Duration: 4 weeks
Timing: January–February 2027
Funding: New Colombo Plan grants of up to $5,800 are available for eligible students.

ASIA3525: Learning Language Locally: China

This course is undertaken as a part of a degree. It involves 4 weeks of study in China over the semester break in late June and early July.

Eligibility: ANU undergraduates who have completed a minimum of 6 units of Chinese language.
Duration: 4 weeks
Timing: ANU mid-year teaching break from late June to early July
Costs: You will pay a program fee of approximately $3500 to ANU which will cover ECNU tuition, accommodation, and application fees. Students will need to pay for their own airfares to Shanghai. Final costs will be confirmed with selected participants.
Funding: New Colombo Plan grants up to $4,000 are available for eligible students

Chinese Language, History and Civilisation in Taipei

This four-week program, offered by National Chengchi University in Taipei, combines intensive Chinese language training with opportunities to gain insights into Chinese civilisation, history, and society.

Eligibility: Any ANU undergraduate student; no prior training in Chinese language or Chinese studies required. 
Duration: 4 weeks
Timing: From January to February 2027
Funding: New Colombo Plan grants of up to $6,000 are available for eligible students

Semester-in-China Advanced Chinese Language Study

This course is undertaken as a part of a degree. The semester of intensive language training will be delivered by East China Normal University in Shanghai.

Eligibility: Students with high-intermediate Chinese language proficiency
Duration: One semester
Timing: Semester 2 2026
Funding: New Colombo Plan grants up to $15,000 for eligible students

CIW China Studies Fellowships

This year-long study program at Xi’an Jiaotong–Liverpool University (XJTLU) in Suzhou, China, is for individuals who have recently completed an undergraduate degree. This fellowship is funded by the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations.

Eligibility: Australian citizens holding an undergraduate degree (or to be awarded an undergraduate degree prior to the start of the program in February)
Duration: One year
Timing: From February until the following January
Funding: A fellowship of $20,000 provides tuition, flights, accommodation and a living stipend.
