Bio
Dr. Fengyuan Ji is a senior lecturer in School of Culture, History and Languages at the Australian National University. Her research focuses on the relationship between language and thought, political discourse in China from Mao’s time to the present, China’s language policy, Western discourses on China, and linguistic landscape. She is the author of Linguistic Engineering: Language and Politics in Mao’s China (University of Hawai’i Press, 2004). Her other publications include Language, State and Society in Post-Mao China: Continuity and Change (Lexington Books, 2011); and Language Planning and Policy in China: Unity, Diversity, and Control (Palgrave-Macmillan, 2018). Her current project is a multidisciplinary study of political messaging in China’s linguistic landscape. In addition to research, Dr. Ji teaches courses on China’s culture and political discourse as well as modern Chinese language.
