CIW Annual Report 2022

Wednesday, 5 April 2023

Director's Message

In 2022, the Australian Centre on China in the World (CIW) delivered another busy program of events, research and training initiatives, publications, and outreach activities. Highlights included former prime minister Kevin Rudd’s presentation of the J. G. Crawford Oration at the inaugural ANU China in the World Forum held on 21–22 November, the first Taiwan Update at ANU, and a special conference on Hong Kong.

Open access publications and podcasts including The China Journal, The China Story, Made in China, and the Little Red Podcast all attracted widespread attention and acclaim, and a mesmerising exhibition by media artist Lu Yang made for a spectacular debut of our new ‘Understanding China Through Art’ program.

We also hosted three international visiting fellows during the year: Joseph Torigian (American University), Samson Yuen (Hong Kong Baptist University), and Edmund Cheng (City University of Hong Kong). In 2023, we will continue to promote a deeper understanding of the Chinese world by investing in research, teaching, and publications and by engaging purposefully and respectfully in public debates on developments in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Chinese diaspora.

I hope you enjoy reading this report. Please be sure to get in touch with us if you would like to find out more about our programs and events: ciw@anu.edu.au
