Film Screening: Detention 返校

103 mins, 2019 (M)
Directed by John Hsu 徐漢強
In 1962, at the height of the White Terror, Greenwood High School is home to a secret reading club, led by Miss Yin and Mr Chang. Second-year, Wei, has a crush on fellow attendee, Fang; but Fang, a troubled and frustrated senior, has fallen for Mr Chang. After Mr Chang mysteriously disappears one day, Miss Yin and Wei find themselves in a school that is increasingly unfamiliar and unsettling. As they search for answers, only they seem to remember Mr Chang’s existence, and they soon encounter a host of ghouls and demons, prowling the hallways, preying on students. Slowly they uncover the horrible truth of their fate. The highest grossing film of 2019, Detention is an elegantly shot supernatural horror film that was based on a video-game, showing how popular culture has opened new narratives on the once taboo history of political repression in Taiwan.
Registration essential; in-person event only.
The Wayfaring: Photography in 1970s-80s Taiwan Exhibition and Remembering Taiwan's Martial Law Conference jointly present this film screening.
