During the last years of Sino-Japanese War, a Chinese villager becomes responsible for the lives of two prisoners from the Japanese Imperial Army—should he kill them or set them free? Filmed in black and white to mimic war movies, actor-director Jiang Wen confronts war and nationalist history with seemingly odd mix of satire, slapstick, violence and pathos, a consciously layered counterpoint to the official narratives, neatly divided into victims and aggressors.

The film screening will be followed by a short discussion.

This film is part of the monthly film series Asia and the Pacific Screens, sponsored by the Australian Centre on China in the World.
