Between 1974 and 1979 an estimated 1.7 million Cambodians died under the Khmer Rouge. The traumatic memory left by this violence continues to haunt Cambodia today. Rithy Panh remembers these atrocities in The Missing Picture (L’Image manquante). In a remarkable departure from standardized documentary practice, Panh employs clay figures to show this tragedy, mixing these creations with still images and film footage taken in the late 1970s.

The Missing Picture won the Prix Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2013, as well as the Grand Jury Prize at the Cinemanila International Film Festival and the Lumières Award for Best Documentary at the 21st Lumières Awards, 2016.

This film is part of Asia and the Pacific Screens Season Seven: Polyphonic Asia, presented by the Australian Centre on China in the World.
